Our scriptural basis for our ministry comes from the following verse:

Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.Deuteronomy 6:5-7

Reasons to believe in Jesus - Reasons for Jesus

Reasons to believe in Jesus Christ

On January 25, 1998, Pastor Glenn preached a sermon entitled "Reasons to Believe in Jesus Christ." The discussion below is a summary of that message. We encourage you to get the tape and listen to the entire message. Tapes are available at the information desk.

No one in history has provoked more controversy, raised more questions or commanded greater reverence than the person of Jesus Christ. Millions of people believe that He is God and have given their lives to Him as Lord and Savior. Others are skeptical about His claims. Time magazine has run the picture of Jesus on the cover sixteen times and asked the question, "Who was Jesus?". Some see Him as just a great teacher, others see Him as a great philosopher, still others see Him as a miracle worker, or just a guy that others made into a God. What is your opinion, who do you say that He is?

Why is Jesus Christ so Controversial?

Most people believe that He did exist. The Bible talks about His life and has been found to be a reliable source of information, but there is also the testimony of church historians and secular historians. Encyclopedia Britannica devotes 20,000 words to Him. He is not controversial because of His teachings, they are reverenced around the world because of His care for those that were down and depressed. The controversy is that He claimed to be God. This sets Him apart from any other religious leader, Mohammed, Buddha, Confucius or Moses. None of them claimed to be God. They only claimed to point to God.

He Claimed to be God

In the Gospel of John we find at least two places where Jesus claimed to be God,

John 5: 16 "So, because Jesus was doing these things on the Sabbath, the Jews persecuted him. [17] Jesus said to them, "My Father is always at his work to this very day, and I, too, am working." [18] For this reason the Jews tried all the harder to kill him; not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God"

John 10:22 Then came the Feast of Dedication at Jerusalem. It was winter, [23] and Jesus was in the temple area walking in Solomon's Colonnade. [24] The Jews gathered around him, saying, "How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Christ, tell us plainly." [25] Jesus answered, "I did tell you, but you do not believe. The miracles I do in my Father's name speak for me, [26] but you do not believe because you are not my sheep. [27] My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. [28] I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one can snatch them out of my hand. [29] My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of my Father's hand. [30] I and the Father are one."[31] Again the Jews picked up stones to stone him, [32] but Jesus said to them, "I have shown you many great miracles from the Father. For which of these do you stone me?"[33] "We are not stoning you for any of these," replied the Jews, "but for blasphemy, because you, a mere man, claim to be God."

There is no question that the religious leaders of that day understood that Jesus was claiming to be God. This is why they were so upset. If they misunderstood Jesus don't you think that He would have straightened them out?

Now, some religions follow Christianity, but do not believe in the deity of Christ. The above two passages show clearly that Jesus did claim to be God and even the Apostle Paul when he wrote to the Colossians was clear that Jesus is God.

Colossians 2:6-9 "So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live in Him, [7] rooted and built up in Him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness. [8] See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the basic principles of this world rather than on Christ. [9] For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form, "

Now, how are we to respond to these claims. We can't say that Jesus was just a great teacher, because if he were not God then He was not moral in any sense. He would have been a liar and a fraud.

C.S. Lewis, one of the greatest writers of the 20th century, had this to say about Jesus "I am trying here to prevent anyone saying the really foolish thing that people often say about Him. I am ready to accept Jesus as a great moral teacher, but I don't accept His claim to be God. A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things that Jesus said would not be a moral teacher, but a madman or something worse" ... "Jesus never gave us the option of saying that He was just strictly a great moral teacher"

And really we have only a couple options when we're trying to understand who He is. Either His claims were truthful or they were false and we have to examine options in regard to those responses. There are three possibilities in regard to who Christ was. He was either a Liar, a Lunatic or He was exactly who He said he was.

Was Jesus a Liar?

Maybe He just made the whole thing up. Well, if He did then He would have been a Hypocrite because He went around telling people to be honest and He would have been living a lie. He would also have been a devil, because He told people that He was the only way to God and He wasn't at all if He were a Liar. And He would have been a fool because He died for His lie. But, you know there is one thing that will eventually bring out the truth and that is pain. Don't you think that as Jesus was hanging on the cross, as they were putting spikes in His hands that He would have given up the lie, if it were a lie. Wouldn't He have told them that He made the whole thing up. But, He never changed His story because He was telling the truth. Jesus went through intense scrutiny. He lived a very public life and there were many that were looking for just the tiniest trip up that would prove Him a liar, but He never made a mistake. He was entirely consistent. Liars will eventually slip up, but not Jesus. He was truthful and He never changed His story. He hung on the cross and died the son of God.

Historian Philip Schaff said, " How in the name of logic, common sense and experience could an imposter that is a deceitful, selfish, depraved man have invented and consistently maintained from beginning to end the purest and noblest character known in history with the most perfect air of truth and reality." He suggested that that is just not possible. After it was all said and done even Jesus' most hateful opponents did not have anything to say to counter Jesus' claims to be truthful. Someone who lived like Jesus, lived and died like Jesus died, and endured the scrutiny that Jesus endured, could not have been a liar.

Was Jesus a Lunatic?

Maybe He believed He was God, but He was in error. Some people believe they are Napoleon or George Washington. Maybe Christ was just not all there and He suffered from a delusion of grandeur.

Dr. Gary Collins from Purdue University said, "Sometimes people who have psychological difficulties will claim to be somebody they are not. Sometimes they claim to be Jesus Christ Himself or they claim to be President of the United Stated or Napoleon or someone else who is famous, But the people who make these kinds of claims, don't just make the claims. We have to look at all aspects of their behavior. In other words, when people make these claims there are other things in their behavior which support the fact that they are mentally unbalanced. We don't see any of these in Jesus."

Jesus was a perfect picture of mental, spiritual, and relational health. He spoke clearly and logically and conveyed His thoughts truthfully. He was steady in suffering, calm in crisis, courageous and full of faith. His scope of knowledge was amazing. He understood situations. His teaching was with authority and power that no other religious leader had. We don't see any evidence of psychiatric problems in the life of Jesus Christ.

Maybe He is Lord

Maybe Jesus was who He said He was. Maybe He was truthful and we can trust what He said. Maybe He was the Savior of the world and He is Lord of Lords and the only hope for all of humanity. If Jesus is God and Lord and Savior what would we expect to see from His life? We would expect to see that there was some evidence in His life indicating that He was God. And, in fact, as we look at Christ's life there is abundant evidence that He is God.

He lived a Sinless Life

First of all He lived a sinless existence. There was not one account from even His harshest critics that Jesus had a flaw in His statements, in His personality, or His character. They were unable to come up with anything. There were times when the religious leaders were standing all around Him and Jesus asked them, "What do you have against Me?" They just disappeared. They had to conclude, even though they did not like what He said, they found Him blameless in all that He did.

He Performed Great Miracles

He went around towns and villages touching people and healing people. He did many miracles. This is certainly the fingerprint of God. Even secular historians acknowledge the miracles that He did.

But the Greatest Proof ... He rose from the Dead

Weeks before He died He would say, "I am going to die on the cross and three days later I will rise again from the dead." Even that was not disproven. He has been vindicated and shown to be truthful. There is tremendous evidence for the resurrection.

You Decide

All along, throughout His life, God's power and presence were in Christ because He was who He claimed to be. All of us need to to come to grips with who Jesus Christ is. We all have to decide as to how we are going to view Him and there are only two ways to do that. He forces us to choose. We can ether acknowledge Him as Lord and Savior and accept Him into our lives or turn from Him. There is no middle ground.

Matthew 7:13, 14 "Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. [14] But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it."

If we accept Him and let Him into our lives He gives us hope for an eternity. We find Heaven and we find vitality in this life and a peace that lasts forever and ever. The other road is where we turn from Him, where we reject Him and we allow our self willed ways to become our God and our Lord. That leads us to a Christless eternity where all the good things in this world that we enjoy are gone. Where there is no love, there is no hope, there is no future, just the anger and the torment from being separated from God. The one who loved us and created us.

Hear what Jesus says. You have to decide. He is either Lord or He is not Lord. There is no middle ground.

John 14:6: "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me."

This forces us to choose and your decision will have eternal ramifications. This is the most important decision that you will ever make. Look carefully at the evidence. Jesus is either a liar, a lunatic, or Jesus is Lord. What will you do for Him. He died for you. Would you like to receive Christ into your life today?

Reasons To Believe in God

On January 11, 1998, Pastor Glenn preached a sermon entitled "Reasons to Believe in God." The discussion below is a summary of that message. We encourage you to get the tape and listen to the entire message. Tapes are available at the information desk.

Is there sufficient evidence to believe in the existence of God? You be the jury. Weigh the evidence and see if there is enough to believe in God beyond a reasonable doubt.

Reason #1 - The Creation (Cosmological) Argument

The existence of the universe demands an explanation and the idea of God satisfies this demand.

Imagine walking through the woods one day and suddenly seeing a 6 ft. tall totally round smooth translucent ball. Where did it come from? There must be some explanation. The idea that it came from nothing at all is something very few people would consider. Some explanation must exist for it's existence. This introduces the principal of sufficient reason. The principal of sufficient reason proposes that some sort of explanation must exist for everything. If the ball was the size of the universe it would cry out for an explanation. Things that don't exist don't need an explanation. If something is caused by something else it can not be the explanation for everything. Explanation can not be found in caused things. There must be something out there that is uncaused and that is the ultimate reason for existence. If you put a circle around the universe is there anything that is completely independent, self sufficient self reliant and eternal and not subject to decay within that circle? There is nothing within that circle that satisfies this. Take a tree for instance, it relies on the rain for water, plants need sun and the human body needs oxygen, food and water. All of these things are dependant on something else. Even when something seems to be the cause for something else it is not the first cause. For instance, Mom and Dad have a baby. Where did baby come from? From the Mom and Dad. This is a cause and effect, but where did Mom and Dad come from, well their Mom and Dad, and where did they come from? You can not have an infinite regress, there must be a first cause. So if we put a circle around the universe and can not find something that is self sufficient, self reliant, eternal and independent, where then do we look? If we consider the second law of thermodynamics we know that everything in the universe is in decay. Even our experience tell us that things are in decay around us. Even we are in decay. These things are not eternal, so the explanation for our world must be outside of the circle that we put around the universe. The being or factor or power responsible for the universe must be all powerful, self reliant, unlimited and eternal. This comes very close to a working definition of God.

Reason #2 - The Design or Teleological Argument

The world has end or design or purpose to it, someone or something is responsible for the order of the universe.

We see orderliness, intricacy, design and what appears to be purposefulness. We have to ask, "Where did it come from?" Many philosophers have said that design always implies a designer. If we look at our watch we know that this did not just happen. If we look at a car or a house or a computer motherboard we don't have any question that some intelligent designer is behind it. The same is true as we look at the world, except that the complexity of the universe is far greater than anything that humans have ever invented. The argument goes like this. All designs imply a designer, there is great design in the universe, therefore there must be a great designer. This argument challenges the Big Bang theory which suggests that the universe came into existence by a sudden cataclysmic explosion of gasses. Scientists are, however, unsure about this whole process. The consensus among scientists is that the world had a beginning, but they are not sure how it began. So they suggest, perhaps, this Big Bang theory. But in fact no single scientist can explain where those gasses came from that supposedly randomly collided and they blush in embarrassment at the mathematical probability of such an collision even producing one molecule, let alone processes as complex as photosynthesis, an eagle in flight or the human body. It just mathematically seems totally improbable. Even those who deny the existence of God have trouble explaining the design and complexity. They marvel at it.

Carl Seagon: "The information content of the brain if written out in English would fill some 20,000,000 volumes as many as in the world's largest libraries. The brain is a very big place in a very small space. The neurochemistry of the brain is astonishingly busy, the circuitry of a machine more wonderful than any devised by humans."

Charles Darwin: "To suppose that the eye, with so many parts all working together, could have been formed by natural selection seems, I freely confess, adsurd in the highest degree."

Take a house, for instance, you don't believe that that came about by chance do you? You believe that there is an intelligent designer behind that house. Someone who laid the foundation. There are framers, there are carpenters, there are electricians, people doing dry wall, landscaping, on and on. We believe that there was an intelligent designer behind the construction of the house and we don't really wonder if anybody is responsible for it. We assume that there must be and when we're in the market for a house, we don't believe that a random explosion is going to produce a house for us. You do not get order out of disorder. You are not going to have something complex and with purpose and design created out of random collisions of particles. We know that this doesn't happen. In fact, order does not emerge from purposelessness. If we throw a bomb into a lumber yard you only get splintered wood. If the evidence for a house falls on the side of an intelligent designer, how much more does the vastly more complicated universe give evidence to an intelligent designer. God alone can account for the complexity of the eye or for an eagle in flight or for the navigational abilities of the homing pigeon. God alone can account for these things. The spinning abilities of a spider. When all is said and done the random chance explanation of this world is highly, highly unlikely.

The argument from design says this, that wherever you see purpose, order, intricacy and design, reasonable people know that someone is responsible for it. And in fact to believe that this world was created by a random explosion takes more faith than to believe that it was created by an intelligent designer and an intelligent creator. In fact, that is what the Bible tells us: that this world is not a chance occurrence, that we are not a chance occurrence, that God has purpose for this world. He has purpose for each of our individual lives.

Psalm 19: 1-5 "The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of His hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they display knowledge. There is no speech or language where their voice is not heard. Their voice goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world. In the heavens He has pitched a tent for the sun, which is like a bridegroom coming forth from His pavilion, like a champion rejoicing to run His course."

The heavens declare, it's like the world speaks to us. The entire world speaks to us, and points, with a big arrow to something beyond all that we could circle. That something beyond this world exists. It all cries out to the existence of a creator. God's fingerprints are everywhere to be seen, whether it's in the beauty of a rainbow or the power of a storm. God, His glory, and power are everywhere to be seen. Verse 3, "There is no speech or language where their voice is not heard." That this is not just a cultural thing, but indeed all languages, all people groups, people from all continents. They go outside and they see the same things that we see, the stars, the sky, the sun and they know that something is there. David declares the glory of God. The skies proclaim the work of His hands.

There are two types of revelation we see in Scripture. What we are talking about today is general revelation. Everyone can see the universe, everyone has a picture of the world, we all interact with the world and are influenced by it.

Romans 1: 19-20 "Since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities--His eternal power and divine nature--have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse."

Here God's power, His qualities, His attributes, His goodness and His love for us are actually communicated through the natural realm, that as we look out we see again God's fingerprints everywhere. They testify that indeed God is there and so we are without excuse in terms of coming to Him one day because He has revealed Himself to us through His creation.

Reason #3 - The Moral Argument

All human beings are conscious of an objective moral law. Moral laws imply a moral law giver. Therefore, there must be a supreme moral law giver.

Moral laws describe what ought to be, what men should do. You don't learn or observe moral laws by seeing how people act, but you look at how they should act. How they ought to act. How do we account for the sense of moral oughtness that is within each and every human being? If human beings are just accidents of nature, grown up germs or graduated gorillas how do we account for the fact that within every culture there seems to be a similar moral code? For instance, people almost universally condemn murder, rape, lying and stealing and value truth telling, loyalty and kindness. How is this? Are gasses and germs and random explosions capable of implanting values in a strikingly consistent moral code? Did these values also come about by chance?

Well someone may object and say that these are just social conventions. They're things your parents teach you and that's why you act in a certain way. They're simply learned over time. This doesn't account for how these values transcend cultures and how within each of us there is the sense of moral oughtness. Have you ever heard two kids arguing and one says "you ought to give me the candy" or "you ought to give me a chance to play with the toy". Or, have you seen people on talk shows who do outrageous things saying "I have my own set of values. You do what you want to do and I'll do what I want to do. I can do whatever I want as long as it does not hurt anybody." These people actually reinforce the fact that there is a moral code by saying these things. They are saying that you should act their way. You ought not to have your moral standard, but you ought to have mine. You ought not to hurt anybody, even though that is often not defined. There is still a sense of ought. You ought to do what I am saying. The appeal to an outside sense of oughtness without first examining why that sense of oughtness exists in the first place is a problem. Why do we feel that way and what is it's source. The Bible says that this is because God has stamped within us a moral code. C. S. Lewis wrote a book entitled "Mere Christianity" which explains this sense of oughtness in more detail. Lewis was a skeptic, but after looking at the facts, became a Christian. Thousands of people have come to faith in God and Christ because of this book. So the moral fiber of the universe and our own soul points to God.

Reason #4 - The Argument from Experience

If God is really out there then we should expect that people would testify to that fact.

Millions and millions of well adjusted people across cultures, across continents, across generations, all testify that their lives have been changed by God, that God has been with them in hard times, that God has answered prayer, that God intervenes on their behalf in circumstances that He came into their lives and that He is influencing them to make better moral choices. Millions and millions of people! Why do so many have such identical experiences? Is it a conspiracy? Is it mass delusion or some kind of wish fulfillment. Well sure there are some people who are delusional. Some people think that they are Napolean, they think they're Jesus Christ, or they claim that they have seen or had an experience with God. Sure there are people like that, but what about the millions of doctors and dentists and construction workers and electricians and hard working men and women throughout the world, honorable butchers and bakers and candlestick makers. They're all there. What about these, who with integrity make claim that God is real in their lives?

This argument is important, and we shouldn't dismiss it too quickly because when it's added to the other arguments we have a strong cumulative case for the existence of God.

What are the Benefits of Believing in God?

OK, maybe there is a God out there, but what are the benefits. Why should I believe in God? What does the existence of a creator mean to you and to me? When we go home we're going to work tomorrow, we're going to school tomorrow, we're going back to the rigors of some relationships that are difficult. Challenges are all around us. What does God's existence mean for me today where the rubber hits the road in my every day life?

1. We can stand in awe at the handiwork of an awesome and infinitely creative God

We can feel the warmth of the sun and the sea breeze, and the beauty around us and colors around us and say "God You are awesome" and give praise to Him and say, like David, "The heavens declare the glory of God."

2. We ourselves have intrinsic self worth, we have self esteem

In our world today our self esteem can take a beating. Miserable and worthless friends can betray us. We see perfect beauty in magazines or we have jobs that just don't compare to others. We feel that we don't measure up.

Our value does not lie in what others say about us, but in what our Creator says about us and He says that we are important, unique, special and are tremendously valued by Him and that He loves us dearly, totally, intimately. He cares about every circumstance in our lives. That is what a creating god does. You see, we are not just an accidental happening, we are not here because of some cosmic collision. We are here because God has a design, a purpose for our lives. He has a plan for us and He wants to bless us and pour Himself into us, so that we, like David, can say " Oh God, the heavens declare Your glory. I give You praise because I am fearfully and wonderfully made." We are very special to God. We have been made in His image, we have been knit together by Him in the womb. He knew us before we even made our appearance. We have been made for a purpose, we are known intimately and loved intensely.

Psalm 139: 1 "O LORD, You have searched me and You know me. You know when I sit and when I rise; You perceive my thoughts from afar. You discern my going out and my lying down; You are familiar with all my ways. Before a word is on my tongue You know it completely, O LORD. You hem me in--behind and before; You have laid Your hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too lofty for me to attain."

Psalm 139:13 "For You created my inmost being; You knit me together in my mother's womb. I praise You because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Your works are wonderful, I know that full well."

We can have self esteem because God says " I have created you and I love you"

3. We have a clear sense of purpose for living

God has created us to love Him, serve Him, and worship Him. He wants us to relate to Him. He wants to be our Savior. He wants to give us eternal life. The eminent scientist Pascal once wrote, " The evidence of God's existence and His gift is more than compelling . There is a God shaped void in the heart of man which can not be filled by anything except God."

God has created us to worship Him and to have a relationship with Him, but some times we allow substitutes to come into our lives for that relationship with God. Money, job success, family activity, relationships, new cars, computers, adventurous experiences, and travel. All of these things we can use as substitutes for loving and worshiping God. There is nothing wrong with those things in themselves, but they can never substitute and bring the fulfillment and the peace and the connection with our Creator that worshiping and loving God provides. When God, who alone can fill that God shaped void fills our hearts and our lives there is a sense of meaning and purpose to our existence that transcends everything else that we have experienced before. We have joy and we have peace that is tremendous, that sets us free and gives us new life and direction. Sometimes, we just wonder why we are here, but when God fills that God shaped void, we know where we have come from. We know why we are here and where we are heading and that gives us tremendous peace.

We looked at the evidence for belief in God. The evidence is significant and the benefits are great. Now, the evidence is there and you are the jury. You need to decide what you will do with the evidences for belief in God.

If you are a Christian today, I want you to know that you can express your faith with great confidence and boldness because your faith is not set on sinking sand. Your beliefs are solidly grounded and you should have confidence in that.

If you are a seeker, I would encourage you to weigh the evidence very carefully, because your decision is the most important decision you will ever make about the place that God will have in your life. And if you are a seeker, I would encourage you to pray what we have called in the past the skeptics prayer. Which is this: "God, I hear all this stuff at church and I don't really believe that You are there, but just in case You are, would You reveal Yourself to me?" I believe that if you will pray that prayer sincerely, that you will receive a visitation in your spirit and in your heart of a God who created this world and who loves you, who died on the cross for your sins, for your salvation and who today calls you into a relationship with Him. He loves you, He cares deeply about you and today you need to take that step. I would ask you to take that step and give your life to the Lord. And those of you who are not ready to take that step keep seeking, because He loves you and He wants to connect with you. He created you and He loves you today.

It is our prayer that these issues will sink into your hearts and spirit and that you would know that God is not just a philosophical category or some cognitive intellectual concept, but that He is a living God.

Do you have questions about God or Faith?

We all have questions about God, the Bible, Jesus and the resurrection. Many people have strong religious beliefs because of what they have heard or what they were taught. We invite you to look at the facts and decide for yourself what you believe. In early 1998, a series entitled "Faith Has It's Reasons",explored some of the questions listed above. The tape series is available through the church office. We've done a summary of these messages which we hope will help you on your search for the truth

OK. What now?

If God really exists and the Bible is really God's message and if Jesus really is God and if He really was raised from the dead then what does that mean for me? God wants you to know that you matter to Him and that He loves you and wants to be involved in your life.

For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. [12] Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. [13] You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. [14] I will be found by you," declares the LORD -Jeremiah 29:11-14

All it requires is a short prayer to God. Something like this "Dear God, I've done things my own way and realize that I've missed the mark. I've lived in self willed ways and now I am ready to embrace a new life with you in charge. I accept you, Jesus, as Lord and director of my life. Come into my life and fill me with your Spirit. Amen"

If you have prayed this prayer then welcome to the family! God will start to work in your new life. Get a Bible and find out what God has to say. Spend time just talking to God in prayer. Pray for wisdom. Find a church that teached God's Word, the Bible. We invite you to come and join us at Crossroads Community Church. See the Home page for directions. We meet at 9:30 A.M.on Sunday mornings.

If you are not ready to make Jesus lord of your life we hope you will keep seeking. Pray the seeker's prayer and let God reveal Himself to you. The seekers prayer goes like this: "God I don't know if I believe in you. But if you really exist, please reveal yourself to me". If you have any further questions, give us a call or fill out the electronic connect card.

Reasons to believe in the Resurrection - Reasons - Resurrection

Reasons to believe in the Resurection

On February 1, 1998 Pastor Glenn preached a sermon entitled "Reasons to Believe in the Resurrection" The following discussion is a summary of that message. We encourage you to get the tape and listen to the entire message. Tapes are available at the information desk.

1 Corinthians 15:29-32 "Now if there is no resurrection, what will those do who are baptized for the dead? If the dead are not raised at all, why are people baptized for them? And as for us, why do we endanger ourselves every hour? I die every day--I mean that, brothers--just as surely as I glory over you in Christ Jesus our Lord. If I fought wild beasts in Ephesus for merely human reasons, what have I gained? If the dead are not raised, "Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die."

Was Jesus raised from the dead? This is one of the most important questions we can ask, because if He were not raised from the dead then we have no hope after this life and we might as well just "eat and drink, for tomorrow we die."

Josh McDowell called the resurrection either a fantastic hoax or a wonderful experience. Jesus predicted the resurrection before his death in Matthew 16:21:

"From that time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, chief priests and teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life."

His purpose in life was to die for our hope. He was seized, accused, mocked, tortured and whipped. They ripped His flesh and they crucified Him. Why would He do this? Jesus was silent and no one spoke up on his behalf. He knew He had to die to carry sin upon Himself. He knew He would be resurrected in three days to crush the power of death so that we would have the hope of eternal life.

Matthew 28:1 "After the Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to look at the tomb. There was a violent earthquake, for an angel of the Lord came down from heaven and, going to the tomb, rolled back the stone and sat on it. His appearance was like lightning, and his clothes were white as snow. The guards were so afraid of him that they shook and became like dead men."

Matthew 28:5 "The angel said to the women, "Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay. Then go quickly and tell his disciples: He has risen from the dead and is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him.' Now I have told you.""

Matthew 28:8 "So the women hurried away from the tomb, afraid yet filled with joy, and ran to tell his disciples. Suddenly Jesus met them. "Greetings," he said. They came to him, clasped his feet and worshiped Him. Then Jesus said to them, "Do not be afraid. Go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee; there they will see me."

Some people have a hard time believing this and have come up with alternate theories to explain the events that happened that day. Let's take a look at the theories that have been proposed.

Alternate Theory #1 - Jesus Did Not Really Die

The Muslims believe that Jesus did not really die on the cross, that he just passed out and was revived later in the tomb. There are several problems with this theory. Many people saw that he was really dead. Not just common people, but highly trained Roman soldiers were there to make sure that he was really dead. They had no interest in seeing Him worshiped, and in fact a Roman soldier pierced Him in the heart and blood and water came out. Pilot needed a certificate of death and four executioners had actually examined Him and declared Him dead. The fact of the matter is that He really was dead.

Alternate Theory #2 - The Disciples Stole the Body

The disciples had no thought of the resurrection. They were devastated when He died and the last thing that was on their minds was for Him to be resurrected. They were hiding from the Romans and the religious leaders, scared to death of being seen. They were not about to face the Roman guards. The tomb was guarded by Roman soldiers and there was a huge stone in front of the tomb with a Roman seal. Everyone knew that if they broke the seal they faced death by the Roman army. The disciples were not able to do this and in fact the stone was not moved by any man, yet it was removed!

Alternate Theory #3 - They All Went to the Wrong Tomb

Imagine the disciples all going to the wrong tomb. They go about telling everyone that Jesus has risen from the dead, totally humiliating the religious leaders and Roman soldiers while all the while guarding the tomb were Jesus lie. Everyone knew that it was the tomb with the big stone in front of it and the Roman soldiers guarding it. They were at the right tomb.

Alternate Theory #4 - Mass Hallucination

Did the disciples, the Romans and the religious leaders all suffer some sort of mass hallucination? Not likely. Hallucinations are not a group experience. It is an individual experience. It is like saying, "Did you enjoy my dream last night." Hallucinations come to people who expect the experience. The disciples were not expecting Jesus to be resurrected and neither were the religious leaders or Roman soldiers.

The Resurrection Theory - Maybe He is Who He Said He Is

Just maybe He is who He said He is. The Old Testament, the New Testament, and even secular history claims that He died, He was buried and He rose from the dead. Now, let's look for some evidence for the resurrection.

The Evidence from Eyewitnesses

When you have eyewitnesses in a trial the lawyer is psyched because by the testimony of two or three the truth can be established. Well, if you could have all of the people who saw Jesus after He was resurrected come into a court room and give testimony for just 15 minutes each they would be giving testimony from noon on Sunday until about 8:00 on Friday night. He appeared to over 500 people before he ascended into heaven 40 days after His resurrection. He appeared to doubters (Thomas, James and Paul), small groups, large groups, during the day, and during the night.

The Evidence from the Disciples

The turnaround in the behavior of the disciples is strong evidence for belief in the resurrection. Before Christ's resurrection the disciples were cowardly. Peter denied Christ three times and the rest of them hid when He was taken. After the resurrection they preached without fear. They stood in public places and preached Christ resurrected and it did not matter to them if they were beaten, stoned, jailed or crucified. They would not stop preaching Christ resurrected even to the point of death. All but one of the disciples died for their faith. There is no other explanation for the change in their behavior but the resurrection of Jesus.

The tomb is empty, Jesus is risen, Jesus kicked the back out of that tomb and made it a bridge to eternal life.

What does this mean to you and me?

1 Corinthians 15:17 "And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins. Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ are lost. If only for this life we have hope in Christ, we are to be pitied more than all men. But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep."

Christ has risen and your faith is not futile. It has great value in this life and the next. Some people see serving God and church as one option among several, one not better than others. They put serving God on the level of cutting the lawn on Sunday morning. Faith in the resurrection should be the foundation of our lives. It is all important, a solid base, essential for this life and the next. We will not regret building on Christ. When difficulties came He is a solid, firm foundation. Stand strong, our faith is not futile. If it were not true, then there are other things we could be doing with our lives, but it is true and it is awesome what God can do in our lives.

You are no longer in your sins, your sins are forgiven. Only God can make a way to walk with Him. Some of us carry a backpack of guilt, but Jesus takes our burden and he removes our sins as far away as the east is from the west. Whatever you have done, whatever your circumstances are, whoever you have hurt, God wants to give you a fresh start today. He does not hold your past against you. He says " Come to me and I will give you a new life." One full of peace and wholeness. Because of the resurrection, He can destroy the power of sin, no matter what it is. Our sins are forgiven.

Because of the resurrection, the power of death is broken in our lives. One second after we take our last breath we will know that this is not a fairy tale. Our future is secure in Christ.

1 Corinthians 15:53 "For the perishable must clothe itself with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality. When the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality, then the saying that is written will come true: "Death has been swallowed up in victory.", "Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?"

Wholeheartily serve God and give yourself fully to the work of the Lord. Stand firm, persist in your faith, because it is based in truth. We are talking about a relationship with a living God, not a religion. Live to serve Him and give priority to seeking Him. The resurrection changes everything. You will never regret giving yourself fully to God. When you see Him, you will wonder how you could have served Him more. Eleven of the twelve disciples died for their faith and gave everything for the Lord. They believed in the reality of the resurrection. He is risen! Alleluia!

John 11:25 "Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?"

Have you lived in self willed ways? Do you want to give your life to the Lord?

The purpose of our church is to:

Make more and better disciples through a Great Commitment to the Great Commandments and the Great Commission.

THE GREAT COMMANDMENT:"Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law? Jesus replied: ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.' This is the first and the greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.' All of the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments." Matthew 22:36-40 (NIV)

THE GREAT COMMISSION:"Then Jesus came to them and said, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.'" Matthew 28:18-20 (NIV)

Statement of Faith

In essential beliefs - we have unity.

"There is one body and one Spirit... one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all." Ephesians 4:4-6 (NIV)

In non-essential beliefs - we have liberty.

"Accept (others in their faith, without passing judgment on disputable matters.) Who are you to judge someone else's servant? To his own master he stands or falls. And he will stand, for the Lord is able to make him stand. ... So then, each of us will give an account of himself to God. Therefore let us stop passing judgment on one another. Instead, make up your mind not to put a stumbling block or obstacle in your brother's way. ... So whatever you believe about these things keep between yourself and God." Romans 14:1-22 (NIV)

In all our beliefs - we show charity.

"If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing." 1 Corinthians 13:2 (NIV)

What We Believe - What We Believe

The Essentials we believe

ABOUT GOD

We believe that there is one true, holy God, eternally existing in three persons - the Father, Son and Holy Spirit - each of whom possess equally all the attributes of deity. God created everything out of nothing and by His sovereign power continues to sustain all things. By His providence He is operating throughout history to fulfill His redemptive purposes. (Genesis 1:1,26,27; Psalm 90:2; Matthew 28:19; II Corinthians 13:14)

ABOUT THE BIBLE

We believe that the Bible, composed of the sixty-six books of the Old and New Testaments, is entirely originated with God and that it was given through the instrumentality of chosen men. It was written by human authors under the supernatural guidance of the Holy Spirit. Therefore, Scripture speaks, at the same time, with the authority of God while also reflecting the backgrounds, styles, and vocabulary of the human authors. The scriptures are inspired by God, and are without error. They are the unique, full and final authority on all matters of faith and practice and there are no other writings similarly inspired by God. (II Timothy. 1:13, 3:16; II Peter 1:20,21; Psalm 119:105, 160, 12:6; Proverbs 30:5)

ABOUT JESUS CHRIST

Jesus Christ is the eternal Son of God. He is fully human and can identify with our needs and struggles, yet fully God, and therefore able to save us from sin. He is equal to the Father. He lived a sinless life of perfect obedience to the will of the Father and voluntarily offered Himself as the sacrifice for the sins of all people by dying on the cross. After three days He arose from the dead and thereby demonstrated His power over sin and death. He ascended into heaven and will return again someday to earth, personally and visibly, in order to consummate history and the eternal plan of God. (Matthew 1:22,23; Isaiah 9:6; John 1:1-5, 14:10-30; Colossians 2:9; Hebrews 4:14,15; I Corinthians 15:3,4; Romans 1:3,4; Acts 1:9-11; I Timothy 6:14,15; Titus 2:13)

ABOUT SALVATION

The central purpose of God's revelation is to call humanity into fellowship with Himself. All people were originally created to have fellowship with God, but have defied and rebelled against God, choosing their independent way, and have, therefore, been alienated from God. This fall into sin has resulted in the corruption of human nature and the need for saving grace. Salvation is the free gift of grace available to all people. It is not earned through a life of good works, religious involvement, or self-improvement. Only by trusting in Christ and personally appropriating this gift through faith can one find forgiveness from sin and eternal life. God wishes all to be saved and is grieved when people go against His will and reject Him. He has, however, sovereignly chosen to give every person a free will and will not force anyone to believe in Him or follow Him. When God has begun a saving work in a person's heart, and as they follow the scriptural admonitions to abide in Christ and persevere in their faith, God gives the assurance of His presence and power. (Romans 6:23; Ephesians 2:8,9; John 1:12, 14:16, 15:1-6; Titus 3:5; Galatians 3:26; Romans 5:1; II Timothy 1:12; Hebrews 7:25; II Peter 2:20-22; Hebrews 6:4-6, 10: 26,27; Revelation 2:7, 11, 17, 26, 3:5, 11, 12, 21)

ABOUT CHRISTIAN LIFE

The essential accompaniment of a genuine saving relationship with Jesus Christ is a life of holiness and obedience. The Holy Spirit, the third person of the Trinity, indwells everyone who accepts Jesus Christ into their lives. We are then shaped by the Holy Spirit to live lives of growing godly character. This character development is a gradual process and will not be completed in this life, yet our consistent progress should be evident to those around us. The Holy Spirit shows us the areas of our lives that hinder our relationship with Him or with other people, and He gives the direction and power we need to move towards positive change in our lives. He helps us to exchange hurtful habits for helpful habits and makes us more like Christ. The result of allowing God to shape our lives and develop within us a growing godly character is greater joy, freedom, peace, and fulfillment. (Titus 2:11-14; I Thessalonians 5:23; Ephesians 2:10, 4:22-24ff; Colossians 2:6,7; Matthew 5:48)

ABOUT ETERNITY

People were created to live forever. We will either exist eternally separated from God by sin, or eternally with God through forgiveness and salvation. Death seals the eternal destiny of each person. After death there will be a resurrection of the body so that each person can stand before the judgment seat of Christ. Here the eternal destiny of each individual will be determined. Unbelievers will be separated from God into condemnation. This is hell. Believers will be received into eternal communion with God and will be rewarded for the good works that they have done in the name of Christ. (John 2:25, 3:16, 5:11-13; Romans 6:23; Revelation 20:15; Matthew 1:8; 2:44, 46; Luke 16:19-31)

ABOUT THE CHURCH

When a person is united with Jesus Christ by faith they become members of His body, the church. There is one true universal church comprised of all who acknowledge Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord. The Scripture directs all believers to gather together to devote themselves to worship, prayer, the teaching of God's Word, to observe communion and baptism, fellowship, service to the body through the use of one's talents and gifts, and outreach to the world. Under the care of the church leadership, the church's members are to work together in love and unity, intent on the one ultimate purpose of glorifying Christ. (Acts 2:42-47; I Corinthians 12-14; Ephesians 4:1-16; Romans 12:4-8)

Our Beliefs - Who We Are

Our church is a community of believers with Jesus Christ as its head. We seek to love, respect and care for one another as a demonstration of our love for God.

Our outreach is to those who have no church home. Many in our area are disillusioned with religion. They have felt the sting of legalism with its impossible demands. Some have seen hypocrisy. Others have had no religious background and therefore see Christianity as irrelevant. The missing element has been healthy relationships with mature believers in Jesus.
